About the Project

Urban areas account for more than 40% of direct global CO2 emissions. To achieve the goal of limiting the global temperature rise to 1.5-2°C, significant efforts are needed to reduce emissions in cities. Carbon market mechanisms under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement present new opportunities for mobilizing large-scale emission reduction measures.

Under the framework of this initiative, Perspectives Climate Research (PCR), the Thai Greenhouse Gas Organization (TGO), and Local Governments for Sustainability Indonesia (ICLEI Indonesia) developed project concepts for engaging in urban Article 6 activities. The goal of this project is to identify high-potential project types, conceptualize and estimate mitigation potential of these projects as Article 6 activities, and interact with international buyers to promote the most promising projects in selected cities to facilitate implementation.

Indonesia and Thailand were chosen as partner countries, focusing on the cities of Krabi and Khon Kaen, Thailand and Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Mission

Our mission is to catalyze urban transformation through the strategic implementation of Article 6 activities, fostering collaborative engagements with city administrations, central governments, and key stakeholders at local, national, and international levels. By developing urban Article 6 concepts in selected cities within Indonesia and Thailand, we aim to create pragmatic structures that significantly reduce emissions and mobilize investment capital for sustainable urban development. Our focus is on supporting the definition, conceptualization, and future implementation of these activities, thereby contributing to the global effort to limit temperature rise in line with the Paris Agreement goals.

Vision

We envision a world where cities leverage innovative market mechanisms to unlock ambitious climate change mitigation, with our project serving as a pivotal model. Through the development of "ready-to-be implemented" activities and the dissemination of knowledge across borders, we aim to inspire cities worldwide to adopt and implement urban Article 6 measures to unlock climate finance. By establishing foundational structures and concepts with high potential for replication, we seek to empower urban stakeholders to attract international finance and drive transformational change towards a more sustainable and resilient future.

A cross-collaborative effort

This project is funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI), which aims to aid countries in the implementation of Article 6 activities. Perspectives Climate Research, ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability Indonesia, and the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization are the implementing partners working to conceptualize and advance the development of Article 6 activities ready for implementation.
